San Antonio has many performing arts theaters and venues where visitors and residents can enjoy plays, concerts, comedy shows, special events and other performances. The Alameda Theater is one of the last grand movie palaces built in the U.S. (opening in 1949) and was the largest theater in the U.S. dedicated to Spanish-language entertainment. The theater is often referred to as the "Apollo Theater for Latinos" and is known for the house's extensive black lighted murals. Today the theater, in association with the Smithsonian Institution and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is the performing arts component of the National Center for Latino Arts and Culture, which was formally organized in 2001. Upon completion of the theater's renovation, it will be a state-of-the-art facility capable of housing performing arts mediums such as television and full Broadway productions, theater, opera, dance, concerts and film.

No visit to San Antonio is complete without a stop at Arneson River Theatre. Located in historic La Villita, there are no bad seats here. You are never more than 13 rows from the entertainment stage on the opposite side of the river. The sound that crosses the water from the stage makes for great acoustics in an intimate setting. On summer nights, folk dances, opera, flamenco and other musical events grace the moated stage. Opulence and attention to architectural detail are characteristic of this San Antonio meeting venues. Built in 1926 as a memorial to World War I veterans, a fire in 1979 completely gutted the auditorium's interior. In 1985, the renovated and modernized building was re-dedicated. Although the building was modernized, the stately elegance and grandeur of a by-gone era was retained. The beautiful stage proscenium and decorative organ grills that are on either side of it, make any stage presentation a first class production. The stage boasts of the 45 foot by 75 foot stage, with a 37 and a half foot high proscenium arch. The stage is complete with a full complement of curtains, theatrical lighting and a concert quality sound system. The main auditorium seats nearly five thousand.

It began in 1994 as an offshoot of The Commerce Street Stage, a professional theatre for both adults and youth. The Empire Theatre is host to productions, banquets, cabaret, chamber orchestras and touring plays. The historical theater is the sister property to San Antonio's Majestic Theatre. The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre was built in 1913, and was renovated and re-opened in 1998. The 60-foot high, four-story building is now home to a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system and is considered ideal for live productions. The Empire was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

The Lila Cockrell Theatre, opened in 1968, is a performing arts venue that hosts ballet, opera, theater and individual concert events. Named after a former San Antonio Mayor, the Lila Cockrell Theatre is located on the east bank of the famous Riverwalk at the Convention Center Complex. A unique feature of the building is the Juan O'Gorman mosaic mural located on the exterior façade.The mural symbolizes the progress made by the confluence of civilizations in the Western Hemisphere starting with Adam and Eve in the center, with European civilization depicted to the right, and indigenous meso-American civilization to the left. The 2,521-seat theater is divided into three levels. It is a very comfortable auditorium with plenty of space between the rows and plush seating. The large stage provides easy viewing and accessibility.

Formerly the SBC Center, this $186 million indoor arena is home to the NBA San Antonio Spurs and AHL Rampage, except when the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo comes to town. Imposing and grand, the AT&T Center has plenty of parking in addition to many concession stands and a Terrace restaurant for hungry sports fans or concert goers. Diehard Spurs fans must pay a visit to the FANShop located on the Plaza Level.
